Let’s Make This a Small Shop Summer

Running an independent shop can sometimes feel relentless.

Rising costs. Quiet days. Worrying headlines. Retail parks. Algorithms. Endless pressure to do more, post more, stock more and somehow keep smiling through all of it.

But despite all that, I still believe small shops bring something incredibly special into the world.

Colour. Personality. Warmth. Creativity. Conversation. Human connection.

And I think that deserves celebrating.

That’s why I created Small Shop Summer.

The idea began with a very simple thought: every time somebody chooses to spend money in an independent business, something positive happens that reaches far beyond the till.

A local family keeps going.
A beautiful shop stays open.
A high street keeps its personality.
A dream survives another day.
A community keeps its colour, warmth and life.

Small shops are never just about products. They are built on people, stories, creativity and care. They are places where customers discover things they didn’t even know they were looking for. Places where someone remembers your name, helps you choose thoughtfully, wraps something beautifully and genuinely wants you to leave feeling happier than when you arrived.

And honestly, I think people are craving that now more than ever.

So rather than quietly worrying about the future of independent retail, I wanted to create something positive. Something joyful. Something practical. Something other shops could join in with easily too.

Small Shop Summer is designed to help independent retailers celebrate what makes them special and gently remind customers of the huge difference their support really makes.

Through Smart Shopkeepers Club, I’ve created free posters, graphics, ideas and resources that other shops can use in their own spaces however they like. Some might go all out with windows, events and themed displays. Others might simply put up one poster or share a message on social media.

Both matter.

Because when lots of small shops all start sharing the same positive message together, something powerful happens.

Customers start noticing.
Conversations begin.
Momentum builds.
And people are reminded that where they choose to shop still matters.

Not from guilt.
Not from pressure.
But because independent shops genuinely make life richer, more personal and more interesting.

I also wanted the campaign to feel visually joyful and optimistic. Bright colours. Summer energy. Bold displays. Happy windows. Shops that feel uplifting to walk into.

Because small shops should never feel apologetic for existing.

They should feel proud of what they bring to the world.

The response to Small Shop Summer has honestly been incredible already. Shops around the country have downloaded the resources, joined in with the campaign and shared their own beautiful ideas, windows and displays. Seeing independent retailers encouraging and inspiring one another has been one of the loveliest parts of the whole experience.

And this is only the beginning.

I truly believe independent retail still has a future, not by trying to become mini department stores or copying giant corporations, but by leaning fully into the things big businesses can never replicate: individuality, responsiveness, creativity, humanity and heart.

So whether you run a gift shop, bookshop, florist, deli, fashion boutique or something beautifully unique entirely your own, I hope you’ll join us.

Let’s make this a Small Shop Summer.
